Arranged by Dale Elmshaeuser This collection, originally arranged for clarinet trio, provides possibilities for young instrumentalists, for situations where no bass instrument is available, and for occasions when something quick and technically easy yet interesting is desired. There is no keyboard involvement. The "Alternate Woodwinds" score offers the option of substitute instruments or of different comnbinations of woodwind instruments. In concerts or worship services, all or selected hymns can be played straight through as a suite. Selected hymns can be played also as hymn intonations, interludes between stanzas, or to accompany a choir or small congregation. Expanded formats for individual hymn settings can be made by playing a unison, melody-only stanza between three-part stanzas. In some cases, two of the parts can form an effective duet setting to be mixed with unison and three-part stanzas. If the melody travels from voice to voice, that is shown by brackets. Since several of these hymn tunes are often sung to more than one text, there are at least fourteen possible hymns, spread rather evenly throughout the church year. This arrangement can be played by as few as three instruments (typically Clarinets I-III. Extra fullness and depth can be obtained by adding a bass clarinet ad lib on the III Clarinet part. Alternate parts are included for Flute, Oboe, Alto Sax, and Tenor Sax, so that the trio can be formed in different ways, or various doublings may be made for larger ensembles. The difficulty level is grade 2 or less.Full set includes an open score for Clarinet Trio, an open score for Flute or Oboe, Alto Sax and Tenor Sax, and performance suggestions.
