Made in the Shade

The live oak tree, when growing out in the open, not only becomes very tall, but also envelops a wide area. The outer branches curve back down and nearly touch the ground, shading a large, clear area like the ground inside a very large tent. The canopy of our tree has been growing long enough to include 147 arrangements and original compositions, offering musical shadings for brasses (54), for strings (24), for woodwinds (48), for orchestral ensembles (5), and for choirs with instruments (16), written by 20 composers and arrangers. So although we work very hard, you might say our music is “made in the shade.”

In this issue, we have the pleasure of introducing our 20th composer/arranger, John Jay Hilfiger of Glens Falls, NY. His composition, “I Love Your Kingdom, Lord” on the tune St. Thomas, is the first in a new series, Arrangements for Orchestral Ensembles. A shade more difficult is Kenneth Kosche's latest arrangement, “Lord, Enthroned in Heavenly Splendor” on the tune Bryn Calfaria-part of our series, Hymns for Orchestral Ensembles. These series accommodate very small, mixed ensembles on up to concert bands, string orchestras, and full orchestras (without percussion). Shades of ancient times are provided by the recurring ritornelle in Jayne Southwick Cool's new arrangement for brasses, percussion and organ, with or without congregation, “To God the Holy Spirit Let Us Pray” on the tune Nun Bitten Wir.

In late July, Dale brought our exhibit to the eastern conference of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians in Frankenmuth, MI. In October, he plans to be at the (40th) annual Lectures in Church Music of Concordia University in River Forest, IL.
